This guide will help you determine the proper hair length for characters.

The guide will be applicable to female characters, male characters and child and/or chibi characters.

Be very observant of the character's body while applying the measurements.

What to consider[edit]

Using this visual guide, we can first start identifying the proper measurements of the body to take into consideration before deducing the character's hair length.

Available lengths[edit]

Our current available hair lengths are:

  • No hair
  • To Ears
  • To Neck
  • To Shoulders
  • To Chest
  • To Waist
  • To Hips / Past Hips
  • Hair Up / Indeterminate

No hair[edit]

When the character does not have hair or a significant amount of hair on their heads. Balding characters can be applied here, if said characters have a very significant hair loss, enough for it to cover less than 25% of the head.

To Ears[edit]

This hair length is applicable to both characters with a buzz cut and characters with longer hair. Consider that your character tried tucking their hair behind their ears, would it be possible? If yes, then the hair is too long for this length.

To Neck[edit]

When the hair is longer than the ears and reach the chin or neck, but does not reach their shoulders. Mullets are applicable to this length.

To Shoulders[edit]

Any hair that reaches up to the collar bone fits into this category.

To Chest[edit]

Hair that reaches past the collar bone, but before hip lenght.

To Waist[edit]

Considering that the waist is always a few centimeters above the bellybutton, hair that reaches the middle section of the torso fit in this category. Be careful not to confuse waist with hips.

To Hips / Past Hips[edit]

Any hair that reaches past the bellybutton and sits either on the hip bone or past it.

Hair Up / Indeterminate[edit]

Using our rule where the hair ends is the hair length, this length can only be selected if the character's hair absolutely cannot be seen or have their hair length deduced. Characters with ponytails, twintails or other types of braids should be fitted into either "to ears" or "to shoulder" length.

This hair length is only applicable if the character either:

  • Has their hair hidden by cloth or other accessory
  • Has a hairstyle that is impossible to see the tips of the hair
