Leading Roles[edit]
Protagonist[edit]
Main character of a story. Usually the main focus of the development, and makes decisions that alter the flow of the story.
Deuteragonist[edit]
Secondary character of main importance in a story. They may be a buddy / partner of the main protagonist, but their roles have as much importance as the main protagonist.
Main Character[edit]
Characters that fall into a tertiary position in the story. Their actions and feeling do not move the plot like protagonists or deuteragonists, but are still instigate movement in the story.
For indexing purposes, on stories where there are an ensemble of multiple protagonists (as in more than three or four), index all as "Main Character".
Supporting Roles[edit]
Supporting Character[edit]
Characters that offer supporting role in a story. They do not make plot-changing decisions, but their existence is important for the plot. They may have a focus in their own arc. They populate the world of the main characters.
Sub Character[edit]
Characters that help make the bulk of the story and make it feel alive, but are irrelevant to the main plot.They tend to have very few lines and only appear in small roles. Like supporting characters, they populate the world of the main characters.
Background characters[edit]
Characters that only appear as background, and only populate the world in very few instances, such as cameos.
Villain[edit]
Characters with an evil purpose that specifically act against the main characters or stand in the way of their objectives. They may or may not be an underling of the antagonist; they may or may not have their own arc. Series with "villain of the week" / "monster of the week" characters are the perfect example of this role. Not the "big bad" or the "final boss", but still an evil character with their own agenda.
Antagonist[edit]
Character that opposes and actively acts against the main characters and strictly move the plot with their evil actions. The big bad. The evilest character.
