Each character is assigned to one or more series using an assignment table.

assignments.cid assignments.pid
The primary assignment is used to determine the media type of a character. Thus it is important not to add characters directly to a franchise. Instead add them to the season they first appear. Or the game they appeared in.
Once a character is in the database with a primary assignment, it can be assigned to any title using Edit Assignments tools.
